Rise of the Footsoldier (2007) Review

Starting off the new blog with a movie review and up first we have the British crime film Rise of the Footsoldier (2007).

The movie follows the life of football hooligan Carlton Leach as he rises from the terraces to the British underworld.

The film stars Ricci Harnett, Craig Fairbrass, Roland Manookian, Terry Stone, Coralie Rose and Billy Murray.

Rise of the Footsoldier has become one of my firm favorite British gangster-crime movies in recent years.  It is pacy, violent and action packed.

The movie begins with the rise of a young Carlton as he becomes a feared general of the ICF(Inter City Firm) football hooligans.

If you grew up in the late 80s and early 1990s the essence of the time era is captured well from the haircuts to the fashion and the music.

The second half of the film follows Carlton Leach as he becomes a bouncer controlling the doors of nightclubs as the rave scene of the 90s and Ecstasy exploded on Britain.

Coralie Rose stars as Carlton's wife in the movie Denny.  I wasn't aware of Coralie Rose previously before Rise of the Footsoldier, but she is smoking hot in the film.

It is on the doors where Carlton Leach meets the notorious criminal Tony Tucker and his associates Pat Tate and Craig Rolfe, who would become known as the "Essex Boys" and their infamous deaths the "Rettendon Range Rover murders".

The trio were shotgunned to death down a small farm track in Essex on the 6th December 1995 and the scene is equally as brutal and violent in the film.

Craig Fairbrass is excellent in his portrayal of the violent drug and steroid induced monstrous Pat Tate as is Terry Stone as Tony Tucker.

The movie has some funny scenes, the standout being when Terry Stone's character Tony Tucker is chasing Roland Manookian(Craig Rolfe) throughout the house for missing a pick up and chucks him off the upstairs roof by pushing him out the window, whilst shouting all sorts of obscenities.

The soundtrack is as good as the movie and has some great artists including Motorhead, Cappella, The River and more.  Some great dance tracks from the late 80s/early 90s.

There are now two sequels in the Rise of the Footsoldier franchise with a fourth currently in the works. Both movies are worth a watch also if you are a fan of the first.

The second film still follows on the life of Carlton Leach after the Range Rover murders, however the third movie is about Pat Tate and his time in Spain, as is the upcoming fourth installment.

Overall Rating: 7/10
