This weeks crime TV show review and up this time we have Underbelly Season 2: A Tale Of Two Cities.
Underbelly is an Australian television true crime-drama series, the first season being about the Melbourne gangland war, the second series which I am reviewing today is the story of Bob Trimbole(Aussie Bob) and Terry Clark aka the Mr Asia drug syndicate.
Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities stars Matthew Newton, Roy Billing, Anna Hutchinson, Asher Keddie, Peter O'Brien, Paul Tassone and Kate Ritchie.
I first stumbled upon Underbelly many years ago on youtube and have been hooked on Australian gangland and true crime ever since.
Underbelly is another crime TV show that tends to get mixed reviews from fans, most tend to either love it or hate it. But personally I am a huge fan of all the Underbelly series and they are all worth a watch if you enjoy gangster movies and TV shows.
Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities encompasses many other stories into the series from the same time period such as the Great Bookie Robbery and the burgeoning corruption within the New South Wales police. The latter which would become the focus of season 3 of Underbelly: A Golden Mile.
The thirteen part series manages to remain fast paced, action packed and violent.
Roy Billing is excellent in his portrayal of Robert "Aussie Bob" Trimbole, who was was an Australian businessman, drug baron and organised crime boss.
Many critics from what I have read don't seem to rate Matthew Newtons performance as the feared drug kingpin Terrance John Clark aka Terry Clark. However, I think Matthew Newton did an excellent job as Terry Clark and is helped by the supporting cast of Anna Hutchinson.
The series begins with the disappearance of Donald Bruce Mackay, who was a local politician and anti-drugs campaigner. He was born and raised in Griffith, New South Wales, and operated his family's furniture business before disappearing and it is Trimbole who is believed to have arranged the contract style killing of Mackay.
From there Aussie Bob meets Terry Clark and the rest is history as they say...
Other well known Australian criminals are featured in season 2 including Brian and Les Kane, "Mr Rent-A Kill" aka Christopher Dale Flannery, Mark "Chopper" Read, Mick Sayers, Andrew Maher, Christoper Martin Johnstone aka "Mr Asia", George Freeman, Lennie McPherson, Ray "Chuck" Bennett and Alphonse Gangitano.
The original soundtrack score from Burkhard Dallwitz is an amazing piece of work, as are the supporting tracks from other bands including Flash and the Pan, Divinyls, Normie Rowe, The Motels and many others.
Overall I would definitely recommend gangster movie/TV and fans of true crime to check out the Underbelly series.
Overall Rating: 9/10
