The next mob movie review for the blog and up this weekend I have been watching the 1998 film Witness to the Mob.
Witness to the Mob is a 1998 made for television movie on the life of mafia Gambino crime family underboss Salvatore "Sammy The Bull" Gravano.
The film follows Sammy The Bull Gravano's rise as a soldier to John Gotti's underboss in the Gambino crime family before turning government witness and entering the witness protection program.
The film stars Nicholas Turturro, Tom Sizemore, Frank Vincent, Vincent Pastore, Debi Mazar, Abe Vigoda, Michael Imperioli and Frankie Valli.
If you are a fan of HBO's hit TV show The Sopranos you will likely recognize many familar names in Witness to the Mob.
Witness to the Mob gets mixed reviews from movie fans but really I think it gets some unjust criticism simply because its not Goodfellas or The Godfather.
I actually first stumbled upon Witness to the Mob randomly whilst on holiday in Spain many years ago on the hotel's TV cable and it has become one of my favorite mafia movies ever since.
At 2 hours and 4 minutes it is longer than most of its counterparts but manages to remain fast paced and an enjoyable story throughout.
Nicholas Turturro makes a great Sammy The Bull Gravano and if anything it is Tom Sizemore as John Gotti who is the weak link, although still makes a passable Gotti.
The movie soundtrack score is excellent and includes the likes of Jimi Hendrix, T-Rex, O'Jays and many others.
If you are a fan of New York mob movies and the John Gotti/Sammy The Bull Gravano story then Witness to the Mob is definitely worth a watch.
If you enjoyed Witness to the Mob then other good related mafia movies include Gotti and Boss of Bosses.
Overall: 7/10
