Blow(2001) Movie Review

Today's crime movie review on the blog and I've just finished watching one of my favorite films which is Blow(2001).

Blow is a 2001 American biographical crime film about American cocaine smuggler George Jung, directed by Ted Demme.

Adapted from Bruce Porter's 1993 book Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the MedellĂn Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All.

Blow is the movie that was responsible for rekindling my love for gangster and crime films.  Not to mention researching all I could about true crime stories such as George Jung's.

I find the story of Pablo Escobar, the Medelin Cartel and the various American drug smugglers of that period in the likes of Miami hugely fascinating.  Cocaine Cowboys is another documentary worth watching if you enjoy Blow.

Anyway, back to Blow...

Johnny Depp's performance as George Jung is one of my favorite's of Depp's work so far, along with Donnie Brasco.

The movie begins with George Jung's early life seeing his family struggle to make ends meet despite his father working hard running his own business, it was never enough.

George plans to get as far away from poverty as physically possible and enters the marijuana smuggling trade before inevitably getting caught and sent to prison.

It is in prison where George meets Diego Delgado, loosely based on the character of Carlos Lehder as he progresses to the cocaine trade meeting notorious individuals such as Pablo Escobar.

May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face.

And may the winds of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars. - George Jung

 Ray Liotta as Fred Jung

Ray Liotta is excellent as George's father Fred Jung, who conditionally loves George despite his crimes and the scenes between him and Depp show a different side to the film.

Paul Reubens stars as the flamboyant Derek Foreal, Georges connection to the pot industry and eventually double crosses him later in the film.

Penelope Cruz plays the fiery Mirtha and despite being beautiful in the movie is generally a very unlikely character.  Also decent acting from Emma Roberts as George Jung's daughter, who this was one of her first movie roles.

The film takes us on a rollercoaster ride from start to finish with George Jung living the American dream and then inevitably regretting it all from prison.

Other than Scarface, Blow ranks up there as one of the best drug movies of all time in my opinion and is one of those films that never gets boring.

The soundtrack is as good as the movie and instantly we are introduced with the sounds of Can't You Hear Me Knocking by The Rolling Stones.

Including other tracks such as Rumble by Link Wray, Black Betty by Ram Jam, Blinded By the Light by Manfred Mann's Earth Band and many others.
